  • स० [सं० चालन] १. (क) चलनी या छाननी में कोई चीज डालकर उसे (चलनी को) बार-बार इस प्रकार हिलाना कि उस चीज के मोटे कण चलनी में बचे रहें और महीन कण नीचे गिर पड़ें। जैसे–गेहूँ छानना। (ख) कपड़े के ऊपर चूर्ण या बुकनी रखकर उसे ऊपर से हाथ से इस प्रकार चलाना कि उसमें का महीन अंश नीचे छनकर गिर पड़े। कपड़छान करना। (ग) किसी तरल पदार्थ को चलनी या वस्त्र में से इस प्रकार निकालना कि उसमें मिले या पड़े मोटे कण ऊपर रह जाएँ। जैसे–चाय या दूध छानना। (घ) उक्त के आधार पर पिसी या धुली हुई भाँग के संबंध में उक्त क्रिया करना। मुहावरा–भाँग छानना=भाँग पीस या घोलकर पीना। विशेष–कुछ लोग इसी के आधार पर शराब के साथ छानना क्रिया का प्रयोग करते है जो ठीक नहीं है। २. ऐसी रासायनिक क्रिया करना जिससे एक धातु में मिला हुआ दूसरी धातु का अंश अलग हो जाय। जैसे–तेजाब में सोना छानना। ३. कोई चीज ढूँढने के लिए सब जगह या सब चीजें अच्छी तरह देखना भालना। जैसे–(क) सारा घर या शहर छानना। (ख) पूरी रामायण या महाभारत छानना
