  • स० [सं० चर्वण] १. खाते समय किसी चीज को दाँतों से बार-बार इस प्रकार दबाते हुए काटना या कुचलना कि वह छोटे-छोटे कणों में विभक्त हो जाय। मुहावरा–चबा-चबाकर बातें करनाबहुत धीरे-धीरे और रुक-रुककर बातें करना। (धूर्त्तता, बनावट आदि का सूचक)। चबे को चबानाकिए हुए काम को फिर-फिर करना। पिष्टपेषण करना। २. पशुओं आदि का किसी को दाँतों आदि से काटना। ३. लाक्षणिक अर्थ में, नष्ट करना। जैसे–तुम्हें तो वह चबा डालेगा
