Shear और Sheer - homophones हैं जो एक जैसे ही pronounce होते हैं पर इनके अर्थ बिलकुल अलग होते हैं। Both words function as different parts of speech with numerous meanings.

Shear 
(As a verb) - काटना/ ऊन कतरना/ बाल काटना (“to cut” or “remove wool by cutting”)
• I have never sheared a sheep before. (मैंने कभी भेड़ के ऊन नहीं कतरे हैं।)

(As a noun) - कतरनी (the act, process, or fact of cutting or clipping)
• We watched the men shear the sheep. (हमने लोगों को भेड़ों को कतरते देखा।)

Sheer 
(As a verb) - मुड़ना/ बहक जाना (turn suddenly or deviate from a course)
• The boat sheered off to the beach. (नाव समुद्र तट के किनारे से मुड़ गयी।)

(As an adjective) -
महीन/ पारदर्शी (fine or transparent)
• She bought some sheer curtains for the room. (उसने कमरे के लिए कुछ पारदर्शी पर्दे खरीदे।)

पूर्णतया/परिपूर्ण (pure or complete)
• We survived by sheer luck. (हम पूर्णतया भाग्य से बच गए।)

खड़ा (very steep, almost straight up and down.)
• There was a sheer cliff just outside my window. (मेरी खिड़की के ठीक बाहर एक बहुत ही खड़ी चट्टान थी।)

A terrifying ordeal: बहुत बुरा अनुभव/ कटु अनुभव (a very frightening experience)

• The hostages' terrifying ordeal came to an end when soldiers stormed the building. (बंधकों का बहुत बुरा अनुभव परीक्षा समाप्त हुआ जब सैनिक इमारत में घुसे।)

Send shivers down the spine: डर से कांपना (to feel very frightened or excited)
• The thought of what might have happened to us sent shivers down my spine. (सोच कर कि हमारे साथ क्या हुआ हो सकता था, मैं डर से कांप उठी।)

Give me goosebumps: रोंगटे खड़े कर देना (a temporary condition in which small raised swellings appear on the skin because of cold, fear, or excitement)
• I can’t watch horror films. They give me goosebumps. (मैं हॉरर फिल्में नहीं देख सकता। वे मेरे रोंगटे खड़े कर देते हैं।)

Make somebody's hair stand on end: किसी को बहुत डरा देना (to make someone very frightened)
• The thought of jumping out of a plane makes my hair stand on end. (हवाई जहाज़ से बाहर कूदने के विचार ने मेरे बाल खड़े कर दिए (मुझे डरा दिया))

Scare the hell/ shit out of somebody: डराना (to make someone feel very frightened)
• You came in without knocking - You scared the shit out of me. (आप बिना दस्तक के आये -आपने मुझे पूरी तरह से डरा दिया।)

NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET

इस idiom को दो parts में समझा जा सकता है:

Number one refers to the better or best position and Bullet refers to rapid speed.
Hence, it shows that someone or something is fast moving to the top position.

यदि कोई व्यक्ति या वस्तु बहुत ही कम समय में और बड़ी तेज़ी के साथ सबसे बेहतर मुकाम हासिल कर ले तो उस situation को दर्शाने के लिए इस idiom का उपयोग बिल्कुल सटीक रहेगा। 

TO DO A NUMBER ON SOMEONE OR SOMETHING

किसी व्यक्ति के साथ धोखा देकर या अपमानित कर उनके साथ बुरी तरह से व्यवहार करना और उन्हें नुक्सान पहुँचाना।

When you do a number on someone, it means that you are manipulating or tricking someone in order to hurt them.

TO HAVE SOMEONE’S NUMBER

No, it’s not what you think it is.

इस idiom का अर्थ किसी से उसका phone number जान लेना नहीं है, बल्कि इसका अर्थ है किसी व्यक्ति को इतनी अच्छी तरह जान लेना कि आप उनके मन की बात को बिना कहे ही पढ़ लें।

When you have someone’s (or something’s) number, idiomatically it means that you have understood someone (or something) so well enough that you can predict or anticipate what they will do.

TO CRUNCH THE NUMBERS

Now this one’s related to the calculations.

If a person does a lot of mathematical calculations or has a job of dealing with a lot of numbers and stuff, we say that he or she is crunching the numbers.

आम बातचीत में इस phrase का use तब किया जा सकता है जब आपको किसी काम को करने के लिए बड़ी संख्याओं का compilation, calculation व analysis करने की आवश्यकता पड़े, खासकर finance से related कार्यों में।

Number यानि संख्या या अंकों के हमारी daily life में अनगिनत uses होते हैं।
अक्सर हम numbers को किसी प्रकार की mathematical calculation या फिर रूपए पैसों का हिसाब किताब करने लिए प्रयोग करते हैं। 

English language में भी numbers का use किया जाता है परन्तु कुछ अलग तरीके से। 

आइये सीखते हैं गणित की दुनिया से बाहर आकर, अंग्रेजी बोलते समय numbers का प्रयोग किस तरह किया जाता है।

A BACK NUMBER

किसी भी outdated या अप्रचलित वस्तु को ‘back number’ कहा जाता है। 
If you call someone a back number, you mean that they are no longer useful or successful.

इस phrase का अधिकतर प्रयोग कोई भी पुरानी publication जैसे की किताब, अखबार, इत्यादि के सन्दर्भ में किया जाता है। 
जिस तरह एक ‘back number newspaper’ यानि पुराना अखबार हमारे कुछ खास काम नहीं आता है, उसी तरह यह phrase किसी भी वस्तु या व्यक्ति की अनुपयोगिता को दर्शाता है। 

WHEN DAYS ARE NUMBERED

It simply means that someone or something will not exist for much longer.
परन्तु इसका use दो तरह से किया जा सकता है-

• When someone’s about to die
किसी बीमार व्यक्ति के में होने पर इसका अर्थ है की उस व्यक्ति की बहुत जल्द मृत्यु होना निश्चित है। 

• At times, it’s also used humorously to talk about the worst outcomes of someone’s actions that are as serious as being almost dead, but just hypothetically.

यदि आप अपने किसी मित्र के मुसीबत में पड़ने का अनुमान मज़ाकिया तौर से लगाते हैं, तब भी आप इस phrase का use कर सकते हैं। 

WHEN SOMEONE’S NUMBER IS UP

Just like the above example, this phrase can also be used to refer someone’s death in the near future.
परन्तु इसका प्रचलित अर्थ किसी अत्यंत गंभीर परेशानी में फंस जाना होता है। 

When you know that you are about to get into grave trouble, you can say that your number is up.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS

This one is more like an advice that you can give to someone.
यह एक सलाह की तरह है जो यह सिखाती है कि कुछ particular situations में अकेले होने की बजाय एक group का हिस्सा होने से फायदा रहता है।  

Hence, it’s actually an idea that one is less likely to be harmed while in a group than by oneself.
