HinKhoj Dictionary

English language में अन्य भाषाओं का भी संकलन है। अन्य भाषाओं से भी कई शब्द English भाषा में लिए गए हैं। आज ऐसे ही कुछ Latin भाषा से लिए गए phrases सीखते हैं।
a priori – पहले से (from what comes before - In English, we use it to describe ideas, arguments, and assumptions that are based on conjecture, prejudice, or abstract reasoning rather than real-world experience.)
alias – कल्पित नाम/ उपनाम/ an assumed name
alibi – अनुपस्थिति का कारण/ अभियुक्त का यह कहना कि वह घटना स्थल पर उपस्थित नहीं था (the claim that a person was somewhere else when an act is alleged to have taken place)
ad infinitum – अनंत काल तक (to infinity)
ad nauseam – घृणास्पद होने तक (refer to something has been done or repeated so often that it has become annoying)
alma mater – जहाँ शिक्षा पाई वह संस्था (one’s university or college)

Two's company; three's a crowd - इस idiom का अर्थ है कि कभी भी कही जाने के लिए या relax करने के लिए दो व्यक्तियों की company सबसे अच्छी रहती है जबकि तीन लोगों की भीड़ होती है।
• When Arun followed Nishant and Surabhi into the drawing room, Surabhi turned to him and said, "Two's company, but three's a crowd." (जब अरुण ने निशांत और सुरभि के पीछे ड्राइंग रूम में गया, तो सुरभि ने उससे कहा, "दो की कंपनी है, लेकिन तीन की भीड़ हैं।")

Perfect ten - Perfect ten का प्रयोग ऐसी चीज़ों को बताने के लिए होता है जो बिलकुल निपुण/ सम्पूर्ण हो, जिनमें किसी प्रकार के सुधार की आवश्यकता ना हो।
• Judges think her dance in the competition is a perfect ten. (जजों का मानना है कि प्रतियोगिता में उसका नृत्य एक आदर्श दस (Perfect ten) का है।)

All-in-one - एक ही में मिला हुआ (combined, all the necessary features of something in one unit)
• It is an all-in-one printer with scanner, copier, and fax. (यह स्कैनर, कापियर और फ़ैक्स के साथ एक ही में मिला हुआ प्रिंटर है।)

All in one breath - एक ही सांस में बोलना (spoken rapidly while one is very excited)
• I told my friend about the accident all in one breath. (मैंने अपने दोस्त को एक ही सांस में दुर्घटना के बारे में बताया।)

One-horse town - छोटा शहर जो किसी भी दृष्टि से important ना हो (used to describe a town or village that is very small; it has a small population)
• I grew up in a one-horse town, and I liked it very much. (मैं एक छोटे से शहर में बड़ा हुआ, और मुझे यह बहुत पसंद था।)

किसी को मुबारकबाद देते समय अक्सर लोगों को यह confusion रहती है कि 'congratulations' शब्द के साथ prepositions- 'on' और 'for' में से किस का use करना सही है। 
बधाई देते समय congratulations के साथ ज़्यादातर preposition 'on' का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है। 
But, different situations के according हम कह सकते हैं कि 'congratulations on' व 'congratulations for' के बीच एक बहुत ही slight difference है:

Congratulations 'on'
किसी general happy occasion पर बधाई देते समय congratulations के साथ preposition 'ON' का use किया जाता है:

• Congratulations on your marriage. (आपको शादी की बहुत बधाई।) 
• Congratulations on your anniversary. (आपको सालगिरह मुबारक हो।)

Congratulations 'for'
किसी particular achievement यानि उपलब्धि के लिए प्रशंसा के रूप में बधाई देते हुए congratulations के साथ preposition 'FOR' का use किया जाता है:

• Congratulations for winning the first prize in the competition. (प्रतियोगिता में प्रथम पुरस्कार जीतने के लिए आपको बधाई हो।)
• Congratulations for completing the project before the deadline. (समय सीमा से पहले परियोजना को पूरा करने के लिए आपको बधाई हो।)

Remember, यहाँ congratulations यानि बधाई एक प्रशंसा (appreciation) के रूप में दी जा रही है।

MAN / WOMAN FOR ALL SEASONS
Meaning: A man or a woman who is successful and talented in many areas.(एक ऐसा पुरुष या महिला जो कई क्षेत्रों में सफल और प्रतिभावान हो।)
• Whether it is the responsibility of the house or the office, Nancy is a woman for all seasons.(चाहे घर की ज़िम्मेदारी हो या ऑफ़िस की, Nancy अपने हर काम में निपुण है।)
•  He is a talented writer, director, and actor; he’s truly a man for all seasons. (वह एक प्रतिभाशाली लेखक, निर्देशक और अभिनेता हैं; वह सच में सभी कामों में माहिर आदमी है।)

IN GOOD SEASON
Meaning: When something takes place at the right or proper time.(किसी कार्य का सही/उचित समय पर होना।)
• I’ll inform you about my decision in good season only. (मै सही समय आने पर ही आपको अपने निर्णय के बारे में सूचित करूंगा।)

THE SILLY SEASON
Meaning: It’s a British phrase for the period when newspapers (and other media) often broadcast trivial material because of a lack of more important news.(एक ऐसी अवधि जिसमे अखबार और अन्य मीडिया, अक्सर महत्वपूर्ण खबरों की कमी होने के कारण तुच्छ सामग्री को प्रसारित करते हैं।)
• You know that the silly season has begun when it is hard to find a decent news in the papers. (जब रोज़ाना अखबारों में काम की खबरें मिलना बंद हो जाएं, तब आपको पता चल जाता है कि silly season शुरू हो चुका है।)

OPEN SEASON (on somebody)
Meaning: a period of time when people criticise or unfairly treat a particular person or group of people(समय की वह अवधि जब लोग किसी विशेष व्यक्ति या समूह की आलोचना करते हैं या उनके प्रति गलत तरीके से व्यवहार करते हैं।)
• I feel that the politicians consider the elections period as an open season on the opposition leaders. (मुझे लगता है कि सभी राजनेता चुनाव का दौर केवल विपक्षी दल के नेताओं की आलोचना व निंदा करने का समय है।)
