Simmer down = to calm down ( शांत होना )
• Ever since I sent him to the boarding school, he has simmered down a lot.
• जब से मैने उसे बोर्डिंग स्कूल में भेजा है, वह बहुत ही शांत होगया है।
The sweet taste of success = The joy of being successful ( सफलता की ख़ुशी होना )
• After so much of hard work, Sally had the sweet taste of success.
• कड़ी मेहनत के बाद Sally ने सफलता का मीठा स्वाद चखा।
A house of cards = Something that is super delicate and weak ( बहुत ही नाज़ुक व कमज़ोर )
• Your plan sounds like a house of cards to me.
• मुझे तुम्हारी योजना बहुत ही कमज़ोर लग रही है।
A wooden face = An expressionless face ( एक भावशून्य चेहरा )
• The police officer listened to his lies with a wooden face.
• पुलिस अधिकारी ने उसके सभी झूठों को बिना किसी प्रितिक्रिया के सुना।
High and dry = When you feel hopeless and there is no one to help you ( जब आप निराश महसूस करें और कोई आपकी मदद के लिए न हो )
• I never thought that my best friend would leave me high and dry.
• मैंने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि मेरी सबसे अछि दोस्त ही मुझे अकेला हताश और निराश छोड़ जाएगी।

Metaphor यानि रूपक अलंकार का प्रयोग दो ऐसी वस्तुओं के बीच तुलना करने के लिए किया जाता है जिनका वास्तविकता में कोई ताल्लुक नही होता जैसे की:
Heartbreak = दिल टूटना
दिल टूटना एक metaphor है अत्यंत दुःख को ज़ाहिर करने के लिए।

• In a nutshell, Jane’s party was just boring.
• कम शब्दों में कहूँ/ संक्षेप में तो Jane कि पार्टी बहुत उबाऊ थी।
Food for thought = Something that compels you to think about it ( कुछ ऐसा जो आपको सोचने के लिए प्रेरित करे )
• You must read this book, it’s a food fo thought.
• तुम्हे यह किताब ज़रूर पढ़नी चाहिए, यह तुम्हे सोच में डाल देगी।
Sea of grief = Immense sorrow ( अत्यंत दुःख )
• I hope he comes out his sea of griefs.
• मै उम्मीद करता हूँ कि वह इस शोक सागर से बाहर आ जाए।
Love is a battlefield = Love is full of difficulties and challenges ( प्रेम संबंध कठिनाइयों और चुनौतियों से भरा होता है )
• After my experience, all I can say is that love is a battlefield.
• अपने अनुभव के बाद मै यही कह सकता हूँ कि प्यार एक युद्ध के सामान है।
A rollercoaster of emotions = a situation that makes you feel excited, exhilarated, happy or sad, disappointed, or desperate; all at the same time ( एक ऐसी स्तिथि जिसमें आप उत्साह, दुःख, ख़ुशी, निराशा आदि, सभी एक साथ महसूस करें )
• Last year was a like roller-coaster of emotions for me.
• पिछला साल मेरे लिए भावनाओं के एक रोलर कोस्टर कि तरह रहा।

EFFLUENT (एफ्लुएंट)
Effluent शब्द का origin latin भाषा के शब्द ‘effluens’ से हुआ जिसका अर्थ है ‘प्रवाही धारा’ = something that flows।
किसी factory या industry के द्वारा नदियों में छोड़े गए untreated यानि असंसाधित और chemical युक्त हानिकारक liquid or gaseous discharge को effluent कहा जाता है ।
Effluents वातावरण के लिए हानिकारक हैं व पानी में रहने वाले जीवों को नुकसान पहुंचाते हैं।
• The factory is shutting down because the owners were accused of discharging effluent into the river.
• कारखाना बंद हो रहा है क्योंकि उसके मालिकों पर नदी के प्रवाह मे प्रदूषित निर्वहन करने का आरोप है।
• Discharge of industrial effluents in the river is one the major reason for the death of aquatic plants and animals.
• नदी में औद्योगिक प्रदूषक तत्वों का निर्वहन जलीय पौधों और जानवरों की मृत्यु के लिए एक प्रमुख कारण है ।
AFFLUENT (अफ्लूएंट)
Affluent का प्रयोग ज़्यादातर एक adjective यानी विशेषण के तौर पर किया जाता है और इसके अनेकों अर्थ होते हैं जैसे कि ‘समृद्ध’, ‘धनि’, ‘संपन्न’ इत्यादि।
यदि आपके पास किसी चीज़ की कमी नही है, खासकर रूपये पैसे की, तो आप खुद को एक ‘affluent being’ कह सकते हैं।
• Mark is a philanthropist and he uses his affluent resources to help the poor.
• Mark एक परोपकारी व्यक्ति है और वह गरीबों की सहायता के लिए अपने समृद्ध संसाधनों का उपयोग करता है।
• Nina’s family is one of the most affluent families in the city.
• Nina का परिवार शहर में सबसे समृद्ध परिवारों में से एक है।
BEAT THE HEAT
To find ways of staying cool and comfortable in a very hot weather (गर्म मौसम में शांत और आरामदायक रहने के तरीके खोजना)
• Hill stations are considered as the perfect holiday spots to beat the heat.
• गर्मी से राहत पाने के लिए पहाड़ी इलाकों को छुट्टियां मनाने का सबसे बेहतर स्थान माना जाता है ।
HEAT SOMEONE UP
To make someone angry (किसी को गुस्सा दिलाना)
• This kind of careless attitude heats me up.
• इस तरह का लापरवाह रवैया मुझे गुस्सा दिलाता है।
HEAT SOMETHING UP
To become more active or intense ( और अधिक सक्रिय या गंभीर हो जाना )
• The new CM’s radical decisions have heated up the whole state government system.
• नए मुख्यमंत्री के परिवर्तनवादी फैसलों ने पूरे राज्य की सरकार प्रणाली को सक्रिय व गंभीर कर दिया है।
IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT
An impulsive action; when something is done without thinking ( बिना सोचे समझे आवेग में आकर कुछ करना )
• Their decision to get married was taken in the heat of the moment and now they are facing the bad consequences.
• उन्होंने शादी करने का फैसला बिना सोचे समझे कर लिया और अब वे इसके दुषपरिणाम भुगत रहे हैं।
