Hydro (या Hydra) शब्द का origin Greek शब्द hudōr से हुआ है जिसका अर्थ water (पानी) होता है। इसका प्रयोग prefix के रूप में भी होता है और जिस भी शब्द के साथ इसे जोड़ा जाता है वह शब्द पानी (water) से सम्बंधित होता है। जैसे -

Hydro: पानी (water)

Hydrophobia: जल का डर (HYDRO + phobia - fear of water)

Hydroelectric: जल विघुत (HYDRO + electric - of or relating to production of electricity by waterpower)

Hydroplane: जल-विमान (HYDRO + plane - a powerboat designed for racing that skims the surface of the water)

Hydrosphere: जलमंडल (HYDRO + sphere - the watery layer of the earth's surface; includes water vapour)

Hydrograph: जलालेख (HYDRO + graph - a mechanism for recording on a chart the changing level of water as in a well, reservoir, stream)

Hydrocarbon: हाइड्रोकार्बन (HYDRO + carbon - an organic compound containing only carbon and hydrogen)

Hydrophone: पाइप में बहने वाले पानी की आवाज़ का पता लगाने वाला उपकरण (HYDRO + phone - Instrument that detects sound of water flowing in pipes)

Hydrometer: पन मीटर/ घनत्वमापी (HYDRO + meter - an instrument for determining the specific gravity of a liquid)

Hydropower: जल विद्युत (HYDRO + power)

Blackball someone - to exclude socially (बहिष्कृत करना)

Their company has been blackballed after the scandals were all over the newspapers. (घोटालों के सभी अखबार में आने के बाद उनकी कंपनी को बहिष्कृत कर दिया गया है।)

to vote against someone (किसी के विरुद्ध मतदान करना)

He was initially blackballed because of a dispute with the committee members. (शुरुआत में हुए समिति के सदस्यों के साथ एक विवाद की वजह से उसके विरुद्ध मतदान किया गया।)

Blacklist someone - a list of persons under suspicion, disfavor, censure, etc. (काली सूची में नाम लिखना)

His record as an anarchist put him on the government's blacklist. (एक अराजकतावादी के रूप में उसके रिकॉर्ड ने उसे सरकार की काली सूची में डाल दिया।)

Blackmail someone - to extort money from (a person) by the use of threats (धमकी द्वारा रुपया लेना/ भेद खोलने की घमकी देना/ ब्लैकमेल करना)

They were found guilty of blackmail and sent to prison. (वे ब्लैकमेल करने के दोषी पाए गए थे और जेल भेज दिया गया।)

In someone’s black books - To be in disgrace or in disfavour with someone (बहिष्कृत व्यक्तियों की सूची‍)

Anuj was in everybody's black book after his fight. (अनुज उसकी लड़ाई के बाद हर किसी की बहिष्कृत व्यक्तियों की सूची‍ में था।)

black sheep of the family -  the worst member of the family (कुल-कलंक)

Hitesh is the black sheep of the family. He's always in trouble with the police. (हितेश परिवार का कुल-कलंक है। वह हमेशा पुलिस के साथ मुसीबत में रहता है।)

Black and white -  in writing or printing (लिखित में)

Your offer sounds good, but I want you to put it in black and white. (आपका प्रस्ताव अच्छा लगता है, लेकिन मैं चाहता हूँ आप इसे लिखित में दें।)

Black and blue - badly bruised (चोट से नीला पड़ा हुआ)

Vijender’s face was black and blue after the boxing match. (विजेंदर का चेहरा बॉक्सिंग मैच के बाद चोट से नीला पड़ा गया।)

Black eye - 1. bruising around the eye (चोट से नीली हुई आँख)

He returned with a black eye from the school. (वह स्कूल से एक चोट से नीली हुई आँखके साथ लौटा।)

2. a damaged reputation (प्रतिष्ठा बिगाड़ना)

His behaviour gave the whole family a black eye. (उसके व्यवहार ने पूरे परिवार की प्रतिष्ठा को बिगाड़ दिया।)

Blackout something - प्रसारित करने से रोकना/ ढक देना (to keep from being broadcast or printed)

All news channels blacked out news of the communal riots. (सभी समाचार चैनलों ने सांप्रदायिक दंगों की खबरों को प्रसारित करने से रोक दिया।)

Black market - places where goods are illegally bought and sold for a profit (चोरबाजार/ काला बाजार)

The black market is one of the reasons of destroying the economy. (काला बाजार अर्थव्यवस्था को नष्ट करने के कारण में से एक है।)

Branded कपड़े, जूते, jewellery आदि लेना सबको पसंद है पर मुश्किल तब होती है जब हमें इस brands के नामों का सही उच्चारण नहीं कर पाते। बहुत बार ये एक बहुत ही awkward situation पैदा करती है। इसलिए आज कुछ brands के सही pronunciation जानते हैं -

GUCCI: गूची (Incorrect - गक्की) [An Italian luxury brand of fashion and leather goods.]

VERSACE: वरसाची/ वर्साची (Incorrect - वरसेस) [An Italian luxury fashion company which produces ready-to-wear and leather accessories.]

DOLCE AND GABBANA: डोल्चे एंड गबाना (Incorrect - डोल्से एंड गबाना) [This Italian luxury brand is also abbreviated as D&G.]

VAN HEUSEN: वैन ह्यूसन (Incorrect - वान हूसेन) [An American clothing company that primarily deals in men’s clothing.]

HERMES: एरमेज़ (Incorrect हर्मीज़) [A French high fashion luxury goods brand]

CHANEL: शनैल (Incorrect - चैनल) [A French fashion company that specialises in ready-to-wear clothes, luxury goods, and fashion accessories.]

LOUIS VUITTON: लूई विटौं/लूई वितां (Incorrect - लुईस वूटॉन) [A French label famous for its trademark handbags, luxury trunks, etc.]

BULGARI: बुलगरी (Incorrect - बलगारी) [An Italian jewellery and luxury goods brand]

BURBERRY: बर्बरी (Incorrect - बरबैरी) [British luxury fashion house]

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN: क्रिस्चाँ लुबुटां/ लुबुतां (Incorrect - क्रिस्टियन लुबॉटिन) [French fashion designer footwear company]
