analogue ---- analog (ogue endings change to og)

dialogue ---- dialog

catalogue ---- catalog

cancelled ---- canceled (l endings do not double in US spellings)

counsellor ---- counselor

levelled ---- leveled

woollen ---- woolen

enrol ---- enroll (Some British English words ending in one 'l' may have double 'll' in the USA spelling)

fulfil ---- fulfill

skilful ---- skillful

wilful ---- willful

encyclopaedia ---- encyclopedia (ae and oe words change to e)

diarrhoea ---- diarrhea

anaemia ---- anemia

authorise ---- authorize (ise endings change to ize)

civilise ---- civilize

organise ---- organize

realise ---- realize

recognise ---- recognize

(Some words are the same in both countries:, size, prize, advise, surprise)

colour or color?

दोनों में से कौन सी spelling गलत है ये बताना बहुत ही आसान है। color गलत लिखा है। पर नहीं। यह भी सही spelling है। हमने अभी तक colour spelling ही सही माना था और color लिखने पर school में गलत कर दिया जाता था। पर अब नहीं। यह confusion शुरू हुआ British English और American English की वजह से। From last few years, we are more drawn towards American English rather than British English.

Today and in later posts, we will see the differences between British English and American English spelling: (Remember both spellings are correct in today's context)

behaviour ---- behavior ( 'our' endings change to 'or')

colour ---- color

favourite ---- favorite

flavour ---- flavor

honour ---- honor

labour ---- labor

neighbour ---- neighbor

amphitheatre ---- amphitheater (re endings change to er)

centre ---- center

kilometre ---- kilometer

litre ---- liter

theatre ---- theater

TO TAKE A RAIN CHECK

Meaning: Used to refuse or postpone an offer (especially a plan to meet someone) in a polite manner

यह अमरीकी कठबोली (slang language) का हिस्सा है जिसका प्रयोग किसी कार्य, खासकर मुलाकात, को विनम्रता से इनकार करना या बाद के किसी सुविधाजनक दिन पर मिलना निर्धारित करने के लिए किया जाता है।

Uses:

• I'm sorry but I have to take a rain check for tonight's dinner. How about next Sunday?
(मुझे क्षमा करना मगर मैं आज रात खाने पर नही आ सकुंगी। अगले रविवार के बारे में क्या ख्याल है?)

• Do you mind if I take a rain check for the movie tomorrow; I am down with high fever.
(अगर आपको परेशानी ना हो तो क्या हम कल की मूवी कैंसिल कर सकते हैं; मुझे बहुत तेज़ बुखार है।)
