IRONYएक ऐसी situation जिसमें परिणाम आपकी intention यानी सोच से बिल्कुल अलग या विपरीत आ जाए, तो उसे irony कहा जाता है। Example:• The fire station burned down. (दमकल केंद्र में आग लग गई।)Fire stations का काम होता है दूसरी जगहों पर लगी आग को बुझाना, खुद fire station में ही आग लग जाना बहुत ही unexpected होगा और ऐसी situation को ironical कहा जाएगा।Some more examples of Situational Irony:• The pilot had fear of heights. (पायलट को ऊंचाइयों का डर है/ से डर लगता है।)• The cobbler’s children have no shoes. (मोची के बच्चों के पास कोई जूते नहीं हैं।)• A member of PETA wore leather shoes to the meeting. (PETA के एक सदस्य ने बैठक में चमड़े के जूते पहने।)
In the context of spoken language, irony का एक meaning यह भी है कि satirical or funny अंदाज़ में ऐसे शब्दों का use करना जो आपकी बात के मतलब से विपरीत (opposite) हों।Examples of verbal irony:• This bed is soft like a brick.(यह बिस्तर एक ईंट की तरह नरम है।)
• Looking at her son’s messy room, Mother said, “Wow, you could win an award for cleanliness!”(अपने बेटे के बिखरे हुए गंदे कमरे को देखते हुए माँ ने कहा, “वाह, तुम तो सफाई के लिए एक पुरस्कार जीत सकते हो!”)
• The President said, “welcome to my humble abode.”(राष्ट्रपति ने कहा, “मेरे गरीब-खाने में आपका स्वागत है।”)

Call (someone) back = to return a phone call ( वापिस फ़ोन करना )Call me back whenever you get time? (जब भी आपको समय मिले, मुझे वापिस कॉल करें ।)
Call off = to cancel ( रद्द करना )

Pay (someone) a call = To visit someone ( किसी से मिलने जाना )
My grandparents pay us a call every two months.(मेरे दादा दादी हमें हर दो महीने पर मिलने आते हैं।)
Call someone’s bluff = Expose someone’s deception ( किसी के धोखे का पर्दाफाश करना)
The atmosphere got a little tense after Sam called Amy’s bluff in front of everyone. (माहौल थोड़ा तनावपूर्ण होगया जब Sam ने सबके सामने Amy का पर्दाफाश किया ।)
Wake-up call = A sign or warning that alerts you (एक संकेत या चेतावनी जो आपको सचेत कर दे )
My father’s heart attack is a huge wake-up call for him about his unhealthy lifestyle. (मेरे पिता को दिल का दौर पड़ना उनकी अस्वस्थ जीवन शैली की तरफ एक बड़ा चेतावनीपूर्ण संकेत है।)
