• Always tired and emotional = a drunk person (हमेशा शराब के नशे में रहने वाला व्यक्ति)

• Someone who is between jobs = someone who is jobless (बेरोज़गार होना)

• Full-figured = an obese person (मोटा व्यक्ति)

• In the family way or expecting = to be pregnant (गर्भवती होना)

• Domestic help = house servant or maid (घर में काम करने वाला नौकर)

• Couch potato = lazy person (आलसी)

• Letting someone go = to fire someone (नौकरी से निकालना)

Following are the ways to create or use Euphemisms:

• Deliberate mispronunciation
किसी शब्द का मिलता-जुलता परन्तु जान-बूझकर गलत उच्चारण करना।
Example: Damn = Darn, Oh shit = Oh shoot

• Idiomatic expressions
परिस्थिति के हिसाब से असल वाक्य के स्थान पर मुहावरा कह देना।
Example: Kick the bucket = To die

• Foreign words
किसी दूसरी भाषा के शब्दों का प्रयोग करना।
Example: faux = fake, faux pas = a foolish mistake

• Using longer words or expressions
ज़्यादा और कठिन शब्दों में कहना।
visually impaired = blind, perspiration = body odor

कठोर शब्दों के स्थान पर मधुर भाषा का प्रयोग करने को Euphemism कहा जाता है।
Euphemism comes from the Greek word ‘euphemia‘, meaning “the use of words of good omen”
आम तौर पर इन situations में euphemisms का प्रयोग किया जाता है:

• किसी दुखद भाव को कम करके बताना
⇒ My uncle passed away.
Pass away (मृत्यु होना) = euphemism for death

• ऐसे विचारों को व्यक्त करना जो की एक सामाजिक वर्जना बन चुके हैं
⇒ They broke up because John was sleeping with his secretary.
Sleeping with someone (किसी के साथ शारीरिक सम्बन्ध होना) = euphemism for a sexual act

• अगर किसी भी बात का सीधे शब्दों में उल्लेख करना उचित न लगे
⇒ You are becoming a little thin on top.
Thin on top (बाल उड़ना) = euphemism for bald

Pick at - धीरे धीरे खाना (to eat food in small pieces and without enjoyment)

Kiran picks at his food. He eats like a bird. (किरण अपने भोजन को बहुत धीरे धीरे खाता है। वह एक पक्षी की तरह खाता है।)

चिड़ाना या परेशान करना (to irritate, to bother)

I hate my new boss. He constantly picks at my work and often tells me to do it again. (मैं अपने नए बॉस को नापसंद करता हूँ। वह हमेशा मेरे काम के लिए परेशान करते हैं और अक्सर मुझे पुनः करने के लिए कहते है।)

Pick off - तोड़ना/ हटाना - जो किसी और वस्तु पर चिपका हो (to remove something that was adhered to something else)

I picked off the price tag before wrapping the gift. (मैंने उपहार को लपेटने से पहले प्राइस टैग को हटा दिया।)

Pick on - किसी को परेशान करना, धमकाना, या तंग करना (to harass, bully, or tease someone)

Teenagers always pick on the new kid in school. (युवा लड़के हमेशा स्कूल में नए बच्चे को परेशान करते हैं।)

Pick up -  उठाना (to lift)

He picked up his book and left the room. (उसने अपनी किताब उठाई और कमरा छोड़ दिया।)

सीखना (to learn through experience)

I picked up a little German when I lived in Germany. (जब मैं जर्मनी में रहता था तो मैंने एक थोड़ी जर्मन सीखीं।)

किसी को गाड़ी से पिक करना (to get somebody by car)

Please come to my office and pick me up at noon.  (कृपया मेरे कार्यालय आएं और मुझे दोपहर में पिक करें।)

पुनः शुरु करना (to continue something at a later date)

Let’s finish this for the day and pick it up again tomorrow. (इसे खत्म करो और कल फिर से पुनः शुरू करना।)

खरीदना (to buy or get something)

Please pick some milk packets up when you go to the store. (जब आप दुकान जाओ तो कुछ दूध के पैकेट्स खरीद लें।)
