As a noun:

the use of something (इस्तेमाल/ प्रयोग)

The exercise of restraint may well be difficult. (संयम का इस्तेमाल शायद मुश्किल हो सकता है।)

As a verb:

to do physical activities to make your body strong and healthy (व्यायाम करना)

She exercises most evenings usually by running. (वह आम तौर पर दौड़ कर ज्यादातर शाम को व्यायाम करती है।)

Eat healthily and exercise regularly. (स्वस्थ भोजन करें और नियमित रूप से व्यायाम करें।)

use or apply (a faculty, right, or process) (प्रयोग में लाना/ इस्तेमाल करना)

The United Nations has exercised its authority to restore peace in the area. (संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने इस क्षेत्र में शांति बहाल करने के लिए अपने अधिकार का प्रयोग किया है।)

The court is not exercising jurisdiction over the merits of the dispute. (न्यायालय विवाद के गुणों के ऊपर अधिकार क्षेत्र का प्रयोग नहीं कर रहा है।)

modus vivendi: an arrangement for peaceful co-existence between conflicting parties (झगड़े का निपटारा होने तक की गई व्यवस्था)

The two states with difficulty have reached a modus vivendi, though friendship is hardly possible. (दोनों राज्य कठिनाई के साथ एक महत्वपूर्ण व्यवस्था पर पहुंच गए हैं, हालांकि दोस्ती मुश्किल है।)

status quo: the existing situation (यथास्थिति)

The new company president has plans to change the status quo and turn the business into a new organization. (नई कंपनी के अध्यक्ष यथास्थिति को बदलने और व्यवसाय को एक नए संगठन में बदलने की योजना बना रहे हैं।)

sub judice: a case under judicial consideration and therefore prohibited from a public discussion (विचाराधीन)

He declined further comment on the grounds that the case was sub judice. (उन्होंने इस आधार पर और टिप्पणी करने से इनकार किया कि यह मामला विचाराधीन था।)

subpoena: written order ordering or to order someone to attend a court of law or be punished (सम्मन जारी करना)

Select committees have the power to subpoena witnesses. (चयन समितियों के पास गवाहों को सम्मन जारी करने का अधिकार है।)

ultra vires: beyond one's legal power or authority (अधिकारातीत)

The Committee's decision was wrong in law, ultra vires and void. (समिति का फैसला कानूनन गलत था, अधिकारातीत और शून्य।)

As a verb

used to talk about the meaning of something (मतलब होना/ तात्पर्य होना/ अभिप्राय होना)

What do you mean? (तुम्हारा मतलब क्या है?)

What does this sign mean? (इस चिन्ह का मतलब क्या है?)

to say that something or someone is very important (मायने रखना)

You mean a lot to me. (आप मेरे लिये बहुत मायने रखते हैं।)

This job means a lot to me. (यह नौकरी मेरे लिए बहुत मायने रखती है।)

My parents mean a lot to me. (मेरे माता-पिता मेरे लिए बहुत मायने रखते हैं।)

to talk about your intention or someone else’s (उद्देश्य बताना/ इरादा बताना)

I did not mean to hurt you. (मेरा इरादा तुम्हें चोट पहुँचाने का नहीं था।)

She did not mean to fight. (उसका लड़ने का उद्देश्य नहीं था।)

He did not mean to cheat on you. (उसका आपको धोखा देने का इरादा नहीं था।)

As an adjective

to say that someone is very rude and behaves badly with people (घटिया/ तुच्छ/ बुरा व्यवहार)

She is a very mean person. (वह एक बहुत ही तुच्छ व्यक्ति है।)

You should not be so mean to people. (आपको लोगो के लिए इतना निर्दयी नहीं होना चाहिए।)

unwilling to give or share things, especially money; not generous (कंजूस)

He is mean to his employees. (वह अपने कर्मचारियों के लिए कंजूस है।)
