idioms (मुहावरे) और proverbs (कहावतें) किसी भी भाषा के अनोखे सांस्कृतिक घटक (unique cultural components) है।

Idioms - Idioms शब्दों का एक निश्चित समूह या एक phrase है जिनका figurative meaning होता है। किसी Idiom का अर्थ उनके शब्दों के अलग अलग अर्थों को देख कर नहीं लगाया जा सकता है क्योंकि वाक्य में सभी phrases का अर्थ निश्चित होता है।An idiom is a phrase that has a meaning of its own that cannot be understood from the meanings of its individual words. जैसे - Kick the bucket. इसका शाब्दिक अर्थ बाल्टी को पैर से मारना है, जो कि इस idiom का अर्थ नहीं है। Kick the bucket का अर्थ है to die (मर जाना)।
इस तरह से idioms किसी भी भाषा को सुन्दर बनाते हैं। कुछ और idioms देखें -

Raining cats and dogs - heavy rain (बहुत तेज़ बारिश होना)

Proverbs - Proverb एक छोटी और प्रसिद्ध कहावत होती है जो सामान्यतः कोई सलाह देती है। ये प्रायः ऐसे सत्य होते हैं जो व्यक्ति के व्यावहारिक अनुभव के आधार पर या उनके common sense पर निर्भर होते हैं। Almost every language has their own proverbs, and some proverbs can be observed in many languages. इनका अर्थ समझना आसान है. कुछ ऐसे ही Proverbs है -

Honesty is the best policy.

All that glitters is not gold.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

The main difference between idiom and proverb is that proverbs, unlike idioms, contain a message or advice. Idioms - complete अर्थ नहीं व्यक्त करते, इन्हें पूरे वाक्य की आवश्यकता होती है जबकि Proverbs एक complete अर्थ देते हैं।

हर महीने जब हमें SALARY (वेतन) मिलती है तो बहुत अच्छा लगता है। The pay or wages you earn for doing your job is called your salary.

यह शब्द (Salary) Latin word "salarium" से लिया गया है। salarium शब्द sal (या salt) से लिया गया है। प्राचीन रोम में, यह विशेष रूप से रोमन सैनिकों को नमक खरीदने के लिए आवंटित राशि होती थी, जो एक महंगी लेकिन आवश्यक वस्तु थी।salt (नमक) को white gold के नाम से भी जाना जाता था क्योंकि इसका प्रयॊग antiseptic के रूप में, खाने को सुरक्षित रखने के और रोम और ग्रीस में payment का एक तरीका भी था।

In the olden time of Rome, the warriors serving the empire were paid with a handful of salt each day. Later, the officers in charge of distributing salt started finding the transport and preservation of the huge bulk inefficient, hence, the reward of salt was replaced by a sum of money allowing each man to buy his own. The money thus received was referred to as their 'salarium' (Latin) or salt-money.  Salarium को आधुनिक समय में salarie और फिर salary के रूप में संशोधित किया गया ।

Today, salt is an inexpensive purchase at the grocery store, and our salary is certainly to be paid in our country's currency.

Correct Pronunciation बहुत जरूरी है especially जब आप बाहर किसी fancy restaurant में जाते हैं और कुछ खाने के लिए मंगवाते हैं। कुछ ऐसे ही सामान्य शब्दों के सही pronunciation सीखते हैं जिन्हें बोलने में अधिकतर हम गलती करते हैं -

Espresso → एस्प्रे-सो

Cappuccino → कै-पू-चीनो

Latte → ला-टे

Mocha → मो-का

Quiche → कीश  

Croissant → क्वा-सोन

Pasta → पाह-स्तह

Pizza → पीत-सा/पीत्सा

Macaron → मै-क-रौन

Tortilla → तौर-ती-या

To play the ape → अजीब व्यवहार करना

Eager beaver → सीखने के लिए तैयार रहना

PRING INTO ACTION - Quickly begin acting or operating (जल्दी से काम करना शुरू करना)

As soon as the teacher came in the class, everyone sprang into action. (जैसे ही शिक्षक कक्षा में आये, सभी ने जल्दी से काम करना शुरू कर दिया।)

SPRING A LEAK -develop a leak (of a boat or container) (छेद करना)

The boat sprang a leak. (नाव में एक छेद हो गया।)

SPRING TO ONE’S FEET - to stand up quickly (जल्दी से खड़े हो जाना)

The audience sprang to its feet and cheered A R Rehman after the concert. (दर्शक संगीत कार्यक्रम ख़त्म होने के बाद जल्दी से खड़े हो गए और एक आर रहमान की प्रशंसा की।)

SPRING BACK - To recover quickly and completely (जल्दी व पूरी तरह ठीक हो जाना)

Saina Nehwal sprang back after her knee injury. (साइना नेहवाल अपने घुटने की चोट के बाद पूरी तरह ठीक हो गयी।)

to jump, bounce (कूदना/ उछलना)

The cat sprang back to its original place on the top of the table. (बिल्ली मेज़ के ऊपर अपने मूल स्थान पर वापस कूद गयी।)

SPRING TO LIFE - To suddenly become alive or active (अचानक जीवित या सक्रिय हो जाना।)

The party sprang to life after midnight. (पार्टी आधी रात के बाद अचानक जीवित हो गयी।)
